Filariasis- Types, symptoms and Treatments
Filariasis is a parasitic disease transmitted by blood-feeding arthropods, mainly black flies, roundworms and mosquitoes. The mosquitoes that carry the microscopic worms usually bite between the hours of dusk and dawn. Filariasis symptoms are-
1.Elephantiasis i.e. fluid collection and swelling
2.Decreased immune system
3.Skin rashes
4.Itching,
5.Urticaria
6.Skin rashes etc.
There is no known vaccine or cure for Filariasis but the most effective method that exists to control the disease is prevention. Some prevention methods of Filariasis are-
- Controlling the vector with larvicides
- insecticide spraying can be effective
- Insect repellent
- screens around houses
- Use bed nets to protect from mosquito bites
Also you can treat it by using medication. Proper treatment is advised based on the types of filariasis along with its symptoms. Diethylcarbamazine (DEC) is the treatment of choice for lymphatic filariasis. However, when co-infection with other filarial organisms exists or in the context of mass drug administration, the treatment course must be adjusted accordingly.
